Movie Magnetism
While Bangkok may be regarded as the tourist centre of Southeast Asia for copies of movies it’s also home to some of the best cinemas in the region, if not the world. Before coming here I would never have imagined that the “standard” cinema rivaled the best of the UK.
And the choice! With a few major companies (EGV, Major Cineplex, SF Cinema City), opening cinemas all over Bangkok (and further afield, obviously) it’s hard to know which one to choose. They all have good sound and picture, most are also showing digital films now, as well. How to decide! For me, there is one big – nay, huge – factor.
Do I get free fridge magnets?
And to answer yes, that means I have to go to a SF Cinema City (usually at Emporium, sometimes at MBK). You see, only SF give you a free magnet for each ticket you buy. Each magnet is a mini-poster for a current movie, and there are a few to collect, depending on the size of the film – so The Incredibles has a set of six, while Taxi may have only two.
And it doesn’t stop there. You’ll find market stalls from Silom to MBK buying and selling them so you can complete your collection. Recently I saw an entire set of Matrix magnets and boy… was I tempted!
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that my closest cinema is at Emporium and so it’s an even easier choice for me but I reckon I’d still travel that little bit further to get the magnets…
Ah yes, the much coveted refrigerator magnets are a major draw for SF Cinema City, but because I’m such a sucker for the caramel popcorn found only at Major Cineplex, I tend to frequent there. :P
My fridge magnet collections is hopelessly pitiful compared to yours. Talk about wow.
You will be excited to hear that Major Cineplex are experimenting with magnets for certain films – the next one being the upcoming Bridget Jones sequel.
No way! I’m gonna be the first one in line for that BJ2 magnet!
what a collection!!! :) you’re definitely a movie goer!
i miss movie theaters in thailand!!! for a much cheaper price, i get better seats compared to here. T_T
