Well it seems that both won two very important goals today, the exit polls seem to suggest that the Military coup leaders are widely supported by the public AND Thaksin’s Manchester City beat rivals Manchester United.

My only amazement is how it takes most modern countries a few days to count votes (which were done using the traditional ballot method) and Thailand somehow manages to collect them all in real time.

Can someone please share with the US government? Maybe we can avoid a mistake like last time!!

Today millions of Thai’s will vote on a military-drafted constitution that will limit the powers of politicians but lead to elections by the end of the year. Whilst there has been numerous reports in the press about the details of the draft, I decided to visit a selection of slums yesterday to see what the people wanted and hoped for Thailand.

I spent 4 hours in a community living by the railway tracks, just down the road from Central World Shopping Centre, and talked to various people about how they felt. Interestingly enough the number one concern was how the lack of education for poor people was not being treated by the government.

As soon as the labs process the film, I will post the multimedia slideshow here.

YouTube access within Thailand is still patchy, even after it was officially unblocked last month.

Access to the site was possible last week on the True network, but since then all access times out.

Anyone else experiencing this? How is access on the other Thai networks?

Update
Well my suspicions are right, it seems that some networks are actually defying the lifting of the ban and banning the site themselves. I’m not sure of the legal aspect of this approach but it sums up that Thailand’s net access is still heavily restricted compared to the rest of the world.

So far the networks stopping you from accessing the site are:

- True
- TOT

Chris kindly sent this screenshot which shows how TOT are handling their own form of privacy

The text reads ” TOT is blocking access to this site that “offends the hearts” of the people of Thailand.”

The worry here is how ISP’s are acting on their own behalf when it comes to net content.

Look I’m a Londoner so any restaurant pretending to serve a good “Ruby Murray (Curry in cockney rhyming slang) gets me alert and wanting to check it out. Indus Bangkok (Sukhumvit Soi 26) has been around for a while and tonight was the best chance to check it out.

Bangkok has a thriving Indian community and with that you’d expect a good dose of establishments serving amazing dishes, but in reality they don’t live up to the hype. I’m biased when it comes to proper Indian cuisine, having spent a fair chunk of time on the continent and also living in Europe’s grandest Indian street, Brick Lane, East London.

Upon entering Indus, you are greeted with stunning architecture and interior design. This isn’t some room pretending to be the Taj Mahal, but a well designed and intriguing atmosphere which adds to the vibe. Numerous awards are displayed to those who enter through the wooden doors and you are greeted by staff who actually look like they are happy to welcome you there.

The bar area is pleasant, but that’s not why we were there so a later review will happen on that aspect. The menu is the key part of this Indian experience, with Northern and Southern cuisine well represented. The dishes are reasonable priced, with your average being between 300 and 500 baht and each of the dishes did not disappoint at all.

In the end, Indus really does deliver a fantastic Indian meal. Highly recommended for anyone wanting a bleedin’ good ruby!

There is no doubt that Thailand is one of the top holiday destinations for travellers. Thailand has some of the worlds best beaches and a melting pot of cultures all living inside Bangkok. Many companies offer trips and flights to visit the various sights and cities, and with this comes the expectation that some might not be as honest as the others.

The problem starts when visitors from other nations experience the “No Blame, not our fault” culture which is so deeply embedded within Thai Culture. Having lived in Thailand for over a year now, I have experienced a wide range of companies refusing to acknowledge when they have done wrong, but nothing could compare to the way Thai Airways reacted this weekend on my flight to Krabi.

Arriving into Krabi Airport, I was told that our bags were missing. After explaining to the baggage staff what the bags looked like, I was told that they would be delivered to the resort later on that day. Anyone who has visited Krabi knows that they have one of the most expensive taxi rates in this country. A 25 minute trip costs 500 baht and the boat from Ao Nang to Railay is 100 baht (if you have 8 other passengers in the boat, if not the cost goes up).

So we arrived at the resort with the clothes on our back and nothing else. This was ok as we were told that the bags would arrive later, this was lie #1. When I called at 4pm, I was told that the bags were missing but they were still arriving that night and could we make our way back to the airport (cost, another 900 baht one way). Upon arriving at the airport we were told:

- They couldn’t find the bags
- They are being delivered in the morning
- They are lost

The lack of any customer support or acknowledgement that Thai Airways lost our bags wasn’t forthcoming. They even had the cheek to say that we must have not put them on the plane or even caught the flight, which didn’t make sense as we had the baggage tags and also were in Krabi. So after spending 2 hours banging our heads against the wall, we went back to the resort, another 900 baht. The customer service lady told us they would be delivered at 9am to the resort.

9am came and went and when we phoned we were told the bags were on the way, or lost, depending on who you spoke to. Eventually after spending 30 hours in the same clothes, we made our way back to the airport (another 900 baht down the drain). We were met with the usual excuses of the bags not being found, on the way or delayed and when we mentioned we had nothing to wear, we were informed we should just buy new clothes. This made me loose my cool as I was sick and tired of Thais assuming that Foreigners are made of money and have thousands to throw around.

Eventually we had enough and decided to walk back into the baggage arrival hall, only to see one of the bags going around on the conveyor belt. This bag was “lost” according to Thai Airways staff.

We eventually got the backs back on the last day, 4 days of wearing cheap imitation clothes and still Thai Airways refused to admit they had done any wrong, saying we must have written our names wrong so therefore the bags were not put on the plane (err hello, ticketing is all digital now darling)

This post is meant to be a warning to all visitors to Thailand, DO NOT give in to the shoddy customer service that some companies try to give. Fight all the way and make them realise that if they want to function in a growing economy of tourism, they need to start accepting blame for their mistakes and fix them as quickly as possible

I should post this in the “Only happens in Thailand” category as you can’t make this stuff up!.

The Associated Press are reporting that bad Thai police are being made to wear cute Hello Kitty masks and armbands in order to shame them when they have done wrong.

No matter how many ribbons for valor a Thai officer may wear, if he parks in the wrong place, or shows up late for work, or is seen dropping a bit of litter on the sidewalk, he can be ordered to wear the insignia.

One should ask, what about those who take cash bribes on a daily basis, or who disobey the law themselves? Will we be seeing more Hello Kitty masks on the boys in lycra than ever before?

“After this policy came out, the police are scared,” the officer, who declined to give his name while discussing this sensitive topic, said. “It will be very embarrassing to walk around with Hello Kitty on your arm.” It is a step down from the Crime Suppression Division’s official motto: “When you have no one to turn to, come to us.”

I’m a ex-Londonder, lived in the city for 10 years and still count it as home, so I can comment on how funny any change in weather causes London to fall over.

Friday’s rain seemed to bring the whole place to a standstill. The headlines screamed:
• Rail companies cancel train services
• Floods cause gridlock on the M5
• Police phone lines down
• Drivers forced to abandon cars

Now anyone who has lived through a typical Bangkok monsoon storm knows what real rain is like, yes the streets are flooded with 1ft of water within minutes, but as quickly as it started it all goes away and life goes back to normal.

London on the otherhand seems to struggle with any kind of weather. Leaves cause massive train delays, snow just shuts down the place and a little bit extra rain and we have the end of the world announcements.

Next time it rains like mad in Bangkok, spare a thought for those stuck in London :)

Taking effect today, a new law allows police officers or government inspectors to seize computers on private premises suspected of containing pornographic material or evidence in connection with either general criminal activities or cyber crimes.

The 2007 Computer-related Crimes Act also prevents unauthorised applications and access made to other people’s computers, as well as alteration, deletion or destruction of the information of others.

Whilst this might seem a step in the right direction, as most modern countries have laws to protect users using the web, this one adds a little Thai flare to the whole saga.

Article 9: Those who unlawfully damage, destroy, delete, alter, or modify, wholly or partly, information on other’s computers: subject to three years jail and/or a Bt100,000 fine.

Article 11: Those who send data or electronic mails to others without revealing their identity, or by posing as someone else, in an act that disrupts the others’ normal computer use: subject to a Bt100,000 fine.

Any my personal favourite, only in Thailand…

Article 18: Inspectors are required to minimally access information on targeted computers and, if unable, are required to produce solid evidence to owner of private premises to support their suspicion over illegal activities and then seize the computers, without court warrants. Entry will be only during daytime and only after showing their ID cards.

The key phrase here being “WITHOUT A COURT WARRANT”

I’m sorry but this country has some of the most corrupt policemen in the world. Only last night did i see a anti-corruption advert featuring two scenes where police took bribes.

Oh yes, expect it to be a bumper christmas for the boys in lycra!
