Bangkok -How the city got its name at the first place ?
First time here and cannot really figure out what’s the best topic to start. Well , there’s no better place to start in Bangkok web blog than talking about how the city got its name at the first place.
What I am about to say is not really a confirmative fact of history or anything, it is just what my grandparents told me when I was little.
The name “Bangkok” actually came from the original name “Bang Markok”, which is made of 2 words, Bang and Markok.
Bang is an old Thai word, meanings village or suburb, and Markok means olive, the green type that is.
In the past about 200 years ago when the city was built, it was believed to be full of Markok (green olive) everywhere near the river, canal ..
So Thai people called this area “Bang Markok” which means The land of Markok (olive) and it became “bangkok” as we know now.
Thats really interesting, I never knew this…
Thanks for providing this interesting information abt ur city.
