Chatuchak Market: Shoes, Cock Fighting and Pizza

Every tourist book lists Chatuchak market (Skytrain Mo Chit Station) as a must see place in Bangkok, and as the worlds biggest market, who can blame them?. Where else can you buy curtains, vintage Nike Jordan 1’s and watch cock fighting taking place?

The Market is open on weekends from 7am till 6pm, although it’s recommended that you visit it early or late in the afternoon as otherwise you end up sweating more than humanly possible. Whilst many guidebooks give you a map, just forget about even following it and explore. There are hundreds of alleyways with stalls containing some of the most amazing stuff one can expect to find.

Here is my personal top 3:

Shoes

Lets face it, life’s pleasure is easily extended with a pair of Nike Jordan 1’s, and hidden near exit 5 is a series of booths selling vintage shoes. Now if you’re not into your pre-owned vintage shoes, well this may seem absurd, but to most sneakerfreaks its pure heaven. Its not uncommon for Japanese collectors paying upto $1000 dollars for a well used pair of Jordans or Air force one’s and the temptation to go mad here, for me, is hard to control

Cock Fighting

Now before I get more spam than a Viagra dealer, I just report on what’s in the market and don’t organise the fights. Hidden away from the main strip is a small area where some of the finest cocks in the city come to fight it out, not always to the death. There is a small plastic ring placed near the cages and then in true Thai fashion, more screaming and shouting on betting odds of who will win. I wont publish where this is, you will have to mail me for further details, out of respect for the guys I spoke to. I have archived more of the images here.

Best Pizza in Bangkok

Before you think I’m mad for writing about pizza on a Thai blog, hear me out. This little gem of a restaurant sells both pizza and amazingly good Thai food. The pizza is by far the best I’ve had outside of Milan and the Thai is in the top 5 for this city. The name of the place is Pizza Bay and for those who know Chatuchak well, it’s by the art section, near exit 5 I believe.

The market is well worth a visit, even if you don’t enjoy crowds and shopping. It has some of the best-priced deals I’ve found in this city and the buzz is great.
