i realise smoking is bad. yadda yadda.

but honestly is the new artwork that’s being plastered all over cigarette boxes necesary? i bought a carton of cigaretets today, and to my horror, instead of the normal general surgeon’s warning sign – smoking will kill you, harm your baby etc., there’s a picture of some man laying in bed with like tubes puncturing his throat. and then i took out all the cigarette boxes from the carton to see if the picture is on all of my cigareete boxes. and to my bigger horror (bigger horror– does that make sense?) there was a selection of nasty ass pictures printed on my cigarette boxes.

beside the mr feeding tube, there’s one of a ragged look woman who looks like a japanese ghost, awful teeth, a piture of an open chest exposing dirty lungs and a picture of a man holding a child while he’s blowing smoke.

man this will definitely boost the sales of novelty cigarette holders.

We’ve had a similar campaign going on in Canada for about five years now. It’s quite disgusting, but I don’t think it has had much of an influence on people who are already smokers. I remember my reaction when I saw the pictures for the first time… Now everyone is so used to it that it almost goes un-noticed. BLECH!

Someone talked about this on the radio:
“P’DJ, the picture is so scary that it make me feels like smoking” .. !?

why not paste them onto cardboard and create a trading card collectors series?

Good idea Paul! Imagine bragging “I’ve got the entire emphysema series!”

Some friends from Ireland once told me that the warnings on cigarettes there say “Smoking may cause harm” and other such wimpy statements. They were understandably shocked upon seeing the warnings on Australian cigarettes say “Smoking causes cancer” and other do-this-and-die lines.

In my office building bathrooms, we have posters of what I believe is meant to be what the insides of a long-time smoker might look like (with a rather detestable looking thing that could be a penis), although they haven’t stopped one idiot from continually smoking in there on the floor I work on.

I know it doesnt make any difference to ignorant / in denial smokers but I think it’s good to show them graphic photos of what they deserve to get and how they deserve to end up.
