Does anyone know why the Thai year changes to 2548 in January and not April?
Yes. The tradition new year was – as you say – april / songkran which is the Thai Lunar Calendar – which was replaced in 1888 by the Thai Solar Calendar, which has the same days, months and timings as the western / gregorian calendar.
Thing is, between 1889 and 1941, it got changed back to april a couple of times and then, in 1941, the Thai PM fixed the new year at january, and there is has stayed ever since.
And yes, in Thailand, 1940 (2484) only had 9 months :)
